You are here for a reason — and the reason is not to fall in love with your pain.
On the road that leads to Athens there stood an inn whose keeper was called Procrustes, and he received travelers with a strange generosity: food, drink, and a single iron bed. One bed, of one size, that never changed.
He would measure the guest against the bed. If the guest was longer, he cut from his legs whatever exceeded it; if shorter, he bound him with ropes and stretched him until he fit. Not one guest ever left that inn alive — because in the keeper’s eyes the bed was the standard, and the human being was the error to be corrected.
Today we have another bed. Its name is the term.
And I am not talking about psychotherapy. Psychotherapy is an established science, with its own tools and those who truly need it. I am talking about something else entirely: about its language after it escaped the clinic and went down into the street, onto the platforms and into the bloggers’ hands — so that people now memorize the vocabulary without ever paying its price. About a generation that took the lexicon and left the therapy.
One difference separates us from the guests of Procrustes: they were stretched with ropes. We lie down on the bed willingly, we thank the one who measured us against it, and we photograph the measurement and post it.
When the Word Is Stolen from Its Place
In 1938 Patrick Hamilton wrote a play about a man who dims the gas lamps in his house every night, then convinces his wife that the light has not changed — that it is her eyes that betray her, her mind that is falling apart. The play was called Gas Light, and from it came the term: a human being driven, deliberately, into doubting the soundness of their own mind.
Today, whoever disagrees with you over a detail is “gaslighting” you. Whoever forgets you on an occasion is “a narcissist.” Whoever criticizes your work is “toxic.” And whoever cuts you off does so “from a place of awareness and healthy boundaries.”
The Australian psychologist Nick Haslam named what is happening “concept creep”: psychological concepts expand horizontally, swallowing cases that were never theirs, and expand vertically, sinking to degrees far milder than the original they were coined for. Trauma used to describe a survivor of war; it came to describe a silly comment in a meeting. Abuse used to describe a crime; it came to describe a raised tone of voice.
And this is not a matter of language. When a word widens until it covers everything, it stops protecting anyone. This expansion happens neither by accident nor by laziness; it happens because there is profit in the word — and whoever uses it knows exactly what they are buying with it.
When a word widens until it covers everything, it stops protecting anyone.
From a Wound You Treat to an Address You Inhabit
Alfred Adler sat in Freud’s first circle and then walked out of it, and described what he called the “safeguarding arrangements.” The neurotic, he said, arranges his symptoms with a fine precision that exempts him from the tasks of life. And he is not lying; his pain is entirely real. But in his hands the pain turns into an official leave of absence.
And why does a person cling to a diagnosis this hard? The answer fits in one sentence: because a diagnosis converts shame into innocence. I am not a failure, I am ill. I did not run away, I was triggered. I did not let you down, I am protecting my energy. It is the cheapest deal on the market: you pay a word, and you collect a closed case.
Sit down once with a man of thirty — no job, no relationship, no project — and listen to him explain his condition. He will explain it superbly: he knows his attachment style, knows his childhood wound, knows which parent did what to him and in which year. A complete map, precise and persuasive. Then look beneath the map and you will find he has not moved two meters from his place in ten years. For him the map is not an instrument of travel. The map is the substitute for travel.
And here lies the gravest distortion psychology has suffered in the last twenty years.
Marsha Linehan built Dialectical Behavior Therapy after having herself been an inpatient on a locked ward, and she built all of it on a rule of two poles that never separate: accept yourself completely as you are, and change completely — in the very same moment. Both poles together, or nothing. Of her patients she says that they are doing the best they can, and that they must do better. Both sentences in the same breath.
Popular culture took the first half and threw the second into the street. It took “I am accepted” and discarded “and I am required.” What remains after that amputation is not half a therapy but something more dangerous than complete absence — for the one who is absent at least knows that he is absent.
And “that’s just how I am” is the shortest sentence in the language capable of ending a person’s life while they are still alive.
The New Class
An entire social hierarchy has grown out of pain: whoever hurts more speaks louder, and his word is beyond debate. The wound became a moral authority — and moral authority is not to be questioned, because questioning it is, in itself, an assault.
Look at the man who fled the pulpit — see how he built a pulpit. The tone is the very same; the sorting of people is the very same. The labels were once “the believer and the stray”; they became “the conscious and the unconscious,” “the healed and the one clinging to his wound,” “the mature and the inner child.” The one who used to tell you “may God guide you” now tells you “you need to work on yourself.” The two sentences perform the exact same function, to the letter: I am above, you are below, and the verdict has been issued with no appeal.
In myth there is a nymph named Echo, punished by Hera to lose her own speech, able only to repeat the last words of whoever stands before her. A whole generation today speaks with Echo’s tongue: borrowed terms, assembled correctly, of which it owns not a single word. Because a term is not owned by memorizing it; it is owned by passing through it.
Take the word “boundaries.” A boundary is a respectable therapeutic concept; it means knowing where your responsibility ends and someone else’s begins. Now listen to how it is used today: a friend who has not answered a message in a month says he is “setting boundaries.” A son cuts off his mother and calls the estrangement “self-protection.” An employee misses his deadlines and writes that he is “honoring his energy.” A healthy boundary is a mature act, spoken to a person’s face, its price paid in full. What we are seeing instead is flight that has found itself a respectable name.
And Jung said a sentence that ought to hang on the door of every clinic: “Neurosis is always a substitute for legitimate suffering.” Which is to say that the disorder, in many cases, is the price we pay to flee a pain we were meant to bear in the first place. The bill is never canceled; it is only deferred — and it comes back with interest.
A Society That Cannot Bear
There is a difference between pain and damage. Pain is a sign of life; damage is a malfunction. Grief over someone lost is not depression. Dread before an exam is not an anxiety disorder. Boredom is not an existential crisis. Rejection is not trauma. Failure is not a crime committed against you.
Irvin Yalom counted what he called the “givens of existence”: death; freedom, with the heavy responsibility it carries; isolation; and meaninglessness. Four from which no human being ever born can escape. He did not describe them as disorders; he described them as the terms of residence on this planet. To feel that your life is without meaning is not a symptom to be treated, but a question to be answered.
Ask your grandmother about a year in which she lost a brother and a home within months — and still rose in the morning and lit the oven. She was not stronger than you by nature; she knew something we have forgotten: that pain is to be carried, and that the carrying itself is what builds the back.
And George Bonanno spent his life studying what happens to people after brutal events, and he arrived at a conclusion that infuriates the psychology-content market: the most common trajectory after a traumatic event is spontaneous recovery, not chronic disorder. Human beings can bear far more than they allow themselves to believe. But we have been taught to read ourselves, always, through the worst possible interpretation — and then we are astonished that we have grown weaker.
The irony is that “distress tolerance” is a core skill in Dialectical Behavior Therapy — under that explicit name, with its own exercises and its own tools. Which means people keep citing a source whose content they ignore.
The Industry
نظرية التعلّق تحوّلت إلى أبراج، وصار يقال «أنا تجنّبي وهي قلقة» بالنبرة نفسها التي يقال بها «أنا برج العقرب».“Sixty seconds are enough to diagnose you.” “Three signs by which you will know he is a narcissist.” “Five sentences — if he says them, cut him off.” Attachment theory has been turned into horoscopes, and “I’m avoidant and she’s anxious” is now said in the same tone as “I’m a Scorpio.”
And this is an economy before it is a science. Content that tells you the problem is outside you sells far faster than content that tells you years of hard work lie ahead. The first hands you instant relief; the second hands you a bill. And an algorithm that knows nothing but reach will lift the first and bury the second — every day, without exception.
In 2022 a study was published examining the hundred most-viral videos about ADHD on one of the platforms, and it found that more than half of them were misleading. This is the material with which millions diagnose themselves every night before sleep — then walk in on a doctor to correct his information for him.
And let no one think this is hard-line talk; let them hear it from the man who wrote the book. Allen Frances chaired the task force of the DSM-IV — one of the men who built the yardstick with their own hands — and then spent years warning against diagnostic inflation and the turning of ordinary life into illness. The man who built the measure stands today to say that people are using it against its purpose.
And there remains a third party who always passes without an audit: the therapists themselves. Some of them discovered that the screen is wider than the room — so out they went, explaining in a minute what needs a session, handing out classifications to people they have never seen, writing the provocative headline that makes the scrolling thumb stop. A therapist who trades precision for reach does not lose followers; he loses the meaning of the profession. And the difference between him and the blogger is that the blogger never swore an oath.
Whom These Words Were Made For
And before the final line of this reckoning, one thing must be said — with no mercy in it, and no going back on it.
This language has saved people. It saved the man who spent twenty years hearing he was “spoiled,” then learned that what he was living had a name. It saved a woman who thought fear was her nature and discovered it was a scar. It saved those who were beaten and then told that this was love.
And these people did not find the word on a screen. They paid for it in years, in shame, in silence, in sessions no one ever knew about — until the word earned its credibility among people.
Then came those who borrow the word without needing it. Such a person is not stealing a word; he is spending down the balance of belief that others deposited with their blood. And when the one who truly needs it comes after him, he finds the vault empty.
So let us look, then, at who pays.
Who Pays the Bill
The whole price is not paid by the one who talks. It is paid by the patient.
The one who says “I’m depressed today because it’s cloudy” pays nothing. The one who pays is the person who has not left their bed in three months and can find no one to believe it is bigger than a mood. The one who says “I’m OCD about how my desk is arranged” pays nothing. The one who pays is the person who washes their hands until they bleed and does not dare to tell. The one who says “I’m in a manic episode, I’m so excited about my trip” pays nothing. The one who pays is the bipolar patient who tore down his home and his work in two weeks, then woke to find his word had become a joke.
And the stigma was never lifted; it only changed its shape. People adopted the “beautiful” disorders: anxiety, mild depression, attachment styles — everything fit for an elegant, sorrowful photograph. And the “ugly” disorders were left where they were, untouched: schizophrenia, psychosis, the severe personality disorders, addiction in its savage stages. Which is to say: society did not come to accept the illness. It accepted its décor.
In myth there is a man named Philoctetes, whom the Greeks left alone on an island because his wound reeked and his screaming disturbed the army. Ten years passed as they besieged Troy without taking it — until they learned the city would fall only to the bow of Heracles, and the bow was with him. So they went back to him: not because they had softened toward his wound, but because they needed what was in his hand.
That is the whole difference: to hold in your hand something other than your wound.
The Narrow Road
It will be said that this is a call to go back to “be a man and keep quiet.” The truth is the exact opposite. “Be a man and keep quiet” is what made the generation of fathers who died in silence and bequeathed us their silence. And the ready-made terms are what made a generation that talks endlessly and does not move. The way out is not between the two; the way out is above them both: name your pain precisely — then carry it, and walk.

DBT.If you recognized yourself in this essay, the lexicon alone is not enough. The next step is a specialist assessment that tells pain from damage, and turns the precise name into real skills and action with the tools of DBT.
