A Harmful Presence Against a Terrifying Absence

Sometimes a person fights his sadness so he can go back to the very life that caused it. On the one who returns every time he is rejected, the fear of abandonment that is crueler than humiliation, and the sadness that can be the beginning of a rebellion.

Sometimes a person fights his sadness so he can go back to the very life that caused it.

وجود مؤذي مقابل غياب مرعب، و في النص شخص متعلق بيحاول يفضل موجود بأي شكل ..Imagine someone who, every time he is rejected, goes back and tries again. He knows he is being humiliated, that he is giving things up, that he is doing things against his own values. But the fear of being abandoned is crueler to him than the humiliation itself, so he chooses the pain he can bear right now. A harmful presence against a terrifying absence, and in the middle an attached person trying to stay present in any form.

و في جلسة من الجلسات قالي جملة فضلت في دماغي : أنا عارف إني بتهان يا دكتور، بس الإهانة ليها آخر، و الغياب مالوش ..I have a client, a man in his early thirties, good job, standing on his own feet, but for a year and a half he has been living this relationship like a door that opens and shuts. She leaves him, he spends two weeks not eating, he writes to her, she answers three days later with two words, he is over the moon, he travels to her, stays two days, she tells him you are suffocating me, he comes back. In one session he said a sentence that stayed in my head: I know I am being humiliated, doctor, but humiliation has an end, and absence does not.

So far it looks like a failed love story, like a thousand others. Here is the problem.

Because he is no longer trying for the relationship alone. Every time he is rejected he says: it is my fault, I asked for too much, if I become better she will love me. And little by little the rejection becomes a verdict on whether he deserves love, and every new attempt becomes a defense of his worth as a human being. He keeps trying because if he leaves her he will be left alone with the question that terrifies him: and what if I really do not deserve it?

يعني بلغتنا كده : أنا الي غلطان دي مش حقيقة، دي طريقة يفضل بيها موجود ..And that question is not from today. I wrote before that when a child is in pain he has two choices: either face the world, or blame himself, and most of us chose to blame ourselves so we could go on living. Because if it is my fault there is hope, if I become better they will love me, but if they are the ones who do not love, then there is nothing I can do, and that is harder for a child than saying I am bad. Freud himself, in 1917, writing on mourning, noticed something strange: the person grieving someone who left his life blames himself with words that are really aimed at the one who left. A person takes the one who is gone inside him and keeps judging himself instead of judging him, so that at least he stays with him. In our language: "it is my fault" is not a fact. It is a way of staying present.

فيسكت و يبلع وجعه و يدافع عن الشخص الي بيأذيه ..And here the war of attrition begins. He needs to be angry but is afraid his anger will push them away. He needs to refuse but is himself terrified of refusal. He wants to protect his dignity and he wants to be loved and he cannot keep both. So he goes quiet, swallows his pain, and defends the person who is hurting him.

لأن الاعتراف بالي بيحصل معناه إنه يبقى مطالب يعمل حاجة، و هو لسه مش قادر يتخلى ..His friend tells him: leave her, man, she is playing you. He snaps back: you do not know her, she was going through things. And that same night he sits alone thinking that if his friend is right, then he is the one who has spent a year and a half defending something that tramples him, and that thought is heavier than he can carry right now, so he shuts the conversation down. Because admitting what is happening means he would be required to do something, and he still cannot let go.

Dignity against love. Admission against helplessness. Presence against absence. And the hard part is that the four do not come one after another. All four are running at the same time inside one person, and that is what drains him, not the rejection itself.

الكلينت بتاعي مش بيختار بين راجل و ست، هو بيختار نفس الاختيار الي اختاره و هو عنده خمس سنين، و كل مرة بيكسب العلاقة و يخسر نفسه شوية ..Gabor Maté says that if a child is forced to choose between two things, staying attached to his parents and being himself, he will choose attachment, because without attachment there is no life at all. And that choice is not made once and done. A person keeps making it as an adult without noticing: swallowing his opinion so he is not left, laughing at a joke that wounds him, apologizing for something that never happened. My client is not choosing between a man and a woman. He is making the same choice he made when he was five, and each time he wins the relationship and loses a little of himself.

I know I am being humiliated, doctor, but humiliation has an end, and absence does not.

مش عشان هو ضعيف، لا عشان الغياب عنده مش غياب، الغياب عنده هو الفراغ السحيق الي كان مستخبي منه طول عمره ..And this particular fear, the fear of loss, I wrote about before: it is like a prison with high walls, cold and dark. If it is planted in someone's heart it stays with him, and little by little he turns into a child clinging to everyone around him. He will surround people with enormous love and give up many things just so they do not leave him. And he is more exposed to exploitation and pain than anyone. Not because he is weak. Because for him absence is not absence. For him absence is the bottomless emptiness he has been hiding from his whole life.

حزنه تقيل و الدنيا ضيقة لوحدها، و الحاجات الي كانت بتخليه يستحمل مبقتش تعمل نفس المفعول ..Until a day comes when he is exhausted and drained, with neither the strength to try nor the courage to walk away. His sadness is heavy, the world is narrow enough on its own, and the things that used to help him endure no longer have the same effect.

قفلت الموبايل و فضلت باصص في السقف لحد الصبح ..For my client it came on a Tuesday. The phone lit up at one in the morning with her name on the screen, the name he used to wake up in the night to check for, and instead of joy he felt suffocation. He told me: I still want her, but the mere thought of explaining and apologizing and giving in all over again left me unable to open the message. I turned the phone off and stared at the ceiling until morning.

A cruel middle of the road: you cannot stay, and you cannot let go.

الجسم خلاص رفض يروح، و العقل لسه شايف الرفض ده خيانة ..In a state like this we can understand the sadness and the loss of desire (what we casually call depression in everyday talk, not a diagnosis of a disorder) as part of the psyche's attempt to deal with a reality that is crueler than it can bear. The sadness here is not a malfunction. The sadness is what stopped him. The stopping prevented another attempt that he might have walked into while still clinging to the same hope. The body has finally refused to go, and the mind still sees that refusal as betrayal.

يعني الحزن ده مش هزيمة، الحزن ده أول حاجة في حياته غلبت الخوف ..Spinoza wrote in his Ethics that an emotion cannot be overcome except by a stronger emotion. Reason alone stops no one. And that is exactly what happened: all the talk he heard from his friends, every time he told himself this is the last time, none of it stood up to the fear, because the fear was stronger than any idea. What stopped him in the end was not an idea. It was a sadness heavier than the fear itself. So this sadness is not a defeat. It is the first thing in his life that ever beat the fear.

لأن الخوف مخلصش، فيفضل قاعد يلوم نفسه : رد، هتخسره، دي فرصتك، يمكن المرة دي تختلف ..Because the fear has not ended, he keeps sitting there blaming himself: answer, you will lose her, this is your chance, maybe this time will be different.

He is hurt by what happened and he punishes himself for no longer being able to take more. This is exactly the double suffering I always talk about: pain is natural, suffering is pain plus resistance. He is hurt by the rejection, and on top of that he fights his own pain because he sees it as weakness.

And the people around him push him to go back to how he was. His mother says: bear it, son, whoever loves endures. A friend says: you are the one making it a big deal. And the one who was "how he was" used to hand over his needs and his dignity in exchange for not being left. Listen, do you want him to get better, or do you want him to keep enduring?

و احنا بنقيس الصحة النفسية بإن الواحد يرجع يضحك و يخرج و يرد على التليفون، مش بإنه يبطل يبيع نفسه ..Because those are not the same thing. The one who endures is the one who kept going back, who pays out of himself, who apologizes for something that never happened. The one who got better is the one who stopped. And we measure mental health by whether a person laughs again and goes out and answers the phone, not by whether he stops selling himself.

مفيش ضمان إنه هيفرح أول ما يمشي، ممكن يبكي و يحن و يتمنى الرجوع، و يبقى محتاج سند و ضهر و حنية عشان ميحكمش على نفسه من وجعه ..The sadness here can be the beginning of a rebellion against a situation that does not fit his values. But rebellion has a price: he will face the loss he was running from, and the question of his worth, whose answer he kept trying to get from someone who rejects him. There is no guarantee he will be happy the moment he leaves. He may cry and long for her and wish he could go back, and he will need support, a back to lean on, and tenderness so he does not judge himself by his pain.

و ده الي بقوله لأي حد واقف في منتصف الطريق ده : الحزن مش عيب، و المسافة فعلا كثيرة عليك، و الأول تاكل ..And there is a scene in the Bible I love on this point. The prophet Elijah, the man who had just won on Mount Carmel against four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal, ran alone into the desert the moment he was threatened with death, sat under a tree and said: it is enough now, Lord, take my life. And he slept. What came to him was not a sermon. An angel woke him and said: get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you. Bread and water, and he slept again, and was woken to eat once more. So even a prophet, when he collapsed, nobody told him get up and carry on. Life told him eat and sleep first. And that is what I say to anyone standing in that middle of the road: the sadness is no shame, the journey really is too much for you, and first you eat.

We understand the fear, the shame, and the sense of being unworthy of love, and we support change without denying the size of the loss. The first thing I do with a client like this is not to tell him leave her. He has heard that from everyone and it did nothing. The first thing is to believe that this fear is real. Validation precedes change. Change that comes from love is steady and calm and has no self-flagellation in it. Change that comes from shouting comes undone with the first message.

مش نص نص، لا، الاتنين صح في نفس الوقت ..Then we separate two things people confuse: radical acceptance of what happened, and approval of it. Accepting that she does not want him the way he wants her does not mean saying she had the right to humiliate him. It means he stops treating reality as if it would change if he apologized one more time. And the dialectic holds both at once: I still love her, and I am not going back. I am hurting, and I am not at fault. Not half and half. No. Both true at the same time.

I still love her, and I am not going back. I am hurting, and I am not at fault. Not half and half. Both true at the same time.

" ده سؤال محدش يقدر يجاوبه عنك، و بالذات مش الشخص الي الإجابة عنده كانت دايما لأ ..And most important: that his worth no longer hangs in the hands of someone who rejects him. Paul Tillich, a man who spent his life writing theology, wrote a sentence I love: simply accept the fact that you are accepted. Not because you earned it, but because that is the original state you were created in. And I wrote it my own way before: we are accepted as we are, even while we need to change. Which means the question "and what if I really do not deserve it?" is one nobody can answer for you, and least of all the person whose answer was always no.

و ده الي بيحصل في العلاج الي بيستعجل، بنرجع الواحد زي ما كان، و زي ما كان ده هو الي جابه لنا ..Because if we help him recover all his energy while he stays convinced that he must pay with himself to be loved, he may spend all of it on one more attempt. That is what happens in therapy that rushes: we return the person to how he was, and how he was is what brought him to us.

منتصف الطريق ده محدش فينا ما وقفش فيه مرة، و أنا عارف شكل الخنقة الي بتيجي بدل الفرحة ..And I am not writing this from above. None of us has never stood in that middle of the road, and I know what the suffocation that comes instead of joy looks like.

عشان لأول مرة فضل ياخد وقته يعرف هو عاوز يرد ولا عاوز يبطل يسأل ..My client still has not opened the message. Not because he has become strong. No. Because for the first time he is taking his time to find out whether he wants to answer, or whether he wants to stop asking.

And the person who rejects him will be the one who benefits most from his therapy.

And you? The last time you went back, were you defending the relationship, or yourself?

At Life Ark we do not tell you to leave or to go back. Then we work with the tools of DBT so that your worth no longer hangs in the hands of someone who rejects you.
