One Minute and a Quarter Century: Amina and Trauma

عن التروما التي لا تعيش في الواقعة بل في صوت صاحبها ، و عن ثلاث غرف خاطئة في الشغل على الصدمات ، و عن الترتيب الذي هو العلاج نفسه .Once Amina said a word of objection, and he seized her by the ears. One minute, and a quarter century of a body that wakes at midnight to wait for him. On trauma that lives not in the event but in the voice of the one who carries it, on three wrong rooms in trauma work, and on the order that is the treatment itself.

كان الأمر دقيقة واحدة ، و عاشت بعدها عمرها كله يصحو جسدها في منتصف الليل لينتظره ..Once, only once, Amina said a word of objection about her husband's nights out, and he seized her by the ears. The whole thing took one minute, and she spent the rest of her life with a body that wakes in the middle of the night to wait for him.

و ربما نسيت هي أيضًا الجملة ، و بقيت في العظام ..There is no alarm clock in the house of al-Sayyid Ahmad Abd al-Jawad, but her heart knows the hour. It rises from sleep on guard when silence settles over the rooms, and she walks to the mashrabiya and stands behind its wood, her eyes on the street until he returns. That day he told her he was a man, the one who commands and forbids, then went off to his evenings and forgot. Perhaps she forgot the sentence too. It stayed in the bones.

هكذا يعمل الخوف حين يطول ، لا يجعلك تهرب من صاحبه ، يجعلك تنتظره ..She entered this house before the age of fourteen and did not leave it for a quarter of a century except rarely. In her first nights she feared the jinn in the empty rooms upstairs and read the Quran until he came home. Then the minute came, and after it the fear of the man grew larger than the fear of the jinn, because the jinn never seized anyone by the ears. The strange thing is that hatred never entered her heart. On the contrary, she stayed up for him more, and when she heard his cane on the street her heart settled, not because he was back, but because the waiting was over. That is how fear works when it lasts long enough: it does not make you flee the one you fear, it makes you wait for him.

A good wife in an old time, people see her as content, they say that is how things were back then and that nothing happened to her. She herself would have said the same. She knew every one of his nights and kept quiet, and she settled for a safety built on surrender. The house that should have been a refuge became a prison, and she its guard, as if fear, when it lasts, becomes a home.

هكذا تتحول اللحظة إلى جرح ، و الجرح إلى قناعة ، و القناعة إلى حياة كاملة تمشي على أطراف أصابعها ..Gabor Maté wrote that trauma is not what happened to you, but what happened inside you because of what happened to you. Amina is that whole sentence. The event was a minute, but what happened inside her became a habit in the body and a silent conviction: that peace comes only through obedience, and that objection brings harm. That is how a moment turns into a wound, the wound into a conviction, and the conviction into an entire life walked on tiptoe.

The mind says this happened twenty years ago and is over; the body says it is happening now, so it wakes at the same hour, tightens the shoulders at the first sound on the stairs, and swallows the words before they reach the tip of the tongue. The body keeps what the mind forgot, and it remembers the trauma not as a story to be told but as a state to be lived. That is why a word like "forget it" does not work: what did not come in through words will not leave through words.

كتبت قبل ذلك عن جيل أهلنا : كانوا فاكرين إن الخوف بيحمي ، لكن اللي حصل إن الخوف كسر ..I am not writing this to make al-Sayyid the devil. The man who grabs his wife by the ears at home is the same man who sings and loses himself in music with his friends at night, and the same man who broke when Fahmy died. In Naguib Mahfouz's novel al-Sayyid is not the monster; he is a man with two faces, and that is harder, because a person can hate a monster and run from it, but the one who loves you and breaks you in the same house leaves you not knowing where to put the fear, so you put it in your body. This is exactly the invalidating environment Marsha Linehan speaks of: not a house without love, but a house with love and with what breaks, where whoever lives there learns that love arrives with the breaking on the same plate. I wrote before about our parents' generation: they thought fear protects, but what happened is that fear broke.

التروما لا تعيش في الواقعة ، تعيش في صوت صاحبها ..If Amina were sitting in front of me in the clinic, I think she would say the matter is not worth talking about, that al-Sayyid is a good man, that she is fine. And I would not need to know the story to see what she carries. It is enough to see how she holds her body, how she presses her legs together, the tone in which she says his name, and what her face says when silence overtakes her. Trauma does not live in the event; it lives in the voice of the one who carries it.

Trauma does not live in the event; it lives in the voice of the one who carries it.

لم يكن لكلامها مكان ، كانت العقوبة أسرع منه ..But here I have to stop, because that is half the truth. The one time Amina left the house to pray at al-Hussein, while her husband was away in Port Said, she collapsed from the heat and a car broke her collarbone. When he returned and found out, he waited until the bone had healed, then decided to expel his wife to her mother's house. Her words had no place. The punishment was faster than he was.

و هذا هو الجزء الذي لا يتكلم عنه أحد في الصدمة ، لا الضرب و لا الصوت العالي ، بل الرجوع إلى نفس المكان بوجه هادئ ، و الحياة التي تكمل فوق الجرح كأنك تخطط لجنازة شخص ما زال ينهض من سريره كل صباح ..After some weeks everything went back, and no one spoke of al-Hussein again, and she stood behind the mashrabiya at the same hour as if nothing had happened. This is the part no one talks about in trauma: not the blows or the raised voice, but the return to the same place with a calm face, and a life that carries on above the wound, like planning a funeral for someone who still gets out of bed every morning.

و هذا لا يختلف كثيرًا عن السيد ، هو أيضًا الآمر الناهي ، لكن هذه المرة على حكايتك ..And here comes the talk about working with trauma, because if Amina walked into a clinic today she would find three rooms in front of her, and all three are wrong. In the first room sits the therapist who reads her body in ten minutes, sees the pressed legs and the tone, and rules: this is trauma, writing the diagnosis before she has spoken. He is not so different from al-Sayyid. He too is the one who commands and forbids, only this time over your story.

الذي ينزل إلى الجحيم و هو مربوط بالسلاسل غير الذي ينزل و هو ماسك المفاتيح ..In the second room sits the therapist who wants the whole story in the first session: tell it from the beginning, what exactly did he do, how many times, while she has not one skill to hold herself together with. He opens the wound and leaves her bleeding between one session and the next, and calls it courage. I wrote before that working with trauma means stirring the pain up again, without anesthetic or painkiller, but only after she has enough skills to get her through the distress. The difference between therapy and violating the sanctity of a soul is not in opening the wound; it is in who opens it, when, and with what hand. The one who descends into hell bound in chains is not the one who descends holding the keys.

The difference between therapy and violating a soul is not in opening the wound; it is in who opens it, when, and with what hand.

أمينة بعد بيت أمها ليست أمينة قبل الحسين ، و من يطلب منها أن تعود كما كانت يطلب منها الكذب مرة أخرى ، و هي تعرف الكذب ..The third room is gentler on the surface and crueler underneath. In it someone tells her in a kind voice: forget, meditate every morning, take a lesson from the ordeal, go back to how you were. It is tender talk, but "how you were" is the most dangerous sentence a person can hear after a trauma. I wrote before: any attempt to go back to who you were is a mad attempt that will imprison you deeper inside your loss and your trauma. The Amina after her mother's house is not the Amina before al-Hussein, and whoever asks her to return as she was is asking her to lie once more, and she knows lying well.

ليست كل الآلام صدمات ، و الإنكار لهذا الفرق هو الإهانة لمن انكسر بالفعل ..And above the three rooms there is a whole floor where everything has become trauma: the phone that was not answered, the friend who was late to reply, the video that writes your mother a diagnosis in a minute, until the word became a painkiller on a wound that was never cleaned, something we press on any pain and move on. Amina, with her broken collarbone and a husband throwing her out of her house, is not in the same row as those upset by a comment. Not every pain is a trauma, and denying that difference is an insult to those who were truly broken.

العلاج ليس أن نعرف حكايتك ، العلاج أن تعيد أنت حكيها ، و أن يكون هناك من يسمع ..So I do not need to know exactly what happened, and I cannot leave it alone. The details are not a condition of healing, but she needs to tell it: to face the exposure, to hear herself say what she never said, and to find, at last, someone who believes her. This is what we call validation in dialectical behavior therapy. Therapy is not that we learn your story; therapy is that you tell it again, and that someone is there to listen.

و بعدها الفعل العكسي ، أن تخرج إلى الحسين مرة أخرى و الخوف معها ، لا بعد أن يزول ، لأنه لن يزول وحده ، تخرج و دقات قلبها تعلو ، فيتعلم الجسد شيئًا ضد ما قالته له الدقيقة ..And the order here is not a detail; the order is the treatment itself. First she learns to name what happens in her body when the silence settles: that she feels a tightness, a weight on the heart, the lump she knows so well how to swallow, and she learns that the wave rises, then falls, and does not kill. Then, and not before, she goes down into the minute. She tells it whole, the ear, the voice, the sentence, and she cries, at last, and the pain happens again but this time in front of someone who believes her, until the pain ends, and there the trauma ends. The miracle is not that the hurt disappears; the miracle is that it becomes a story told instead of a state lived. Then comes opposite action: going out to al-Hussein again with the fear alongside her, not after it is gone, because it will not go on its own. She goes out with her heart pounding, and the body learns something against what the minute told it.

و الفهم ليس تبرير ، الفهم رحمة ، رحمة بأمينة قبل أن تكون بالسيد ..And acceptance here does not mean saying al-Sayyid was right. Radical acceptance means she stops living as if the minute never happened, and at the same time stops living as if it is happening now. I can reject what was done to me and accept that it has become part of my story: both are true. And understanding is not justification; understanding is mercy, mercy for Amina before any mercy for al-Sayyid.

و لهذا حين تدخل أمينة العيادة لا أجدها غريبة ..I myself did not learn this from books first. I once wrote: I was forbidden to be angry, so I drew half a smile on my face. That half smile is Amina's mashrabiya, a long stand behind wood, looking out and never stepping out. And that is why, when Amina walks into the clinic, I do not find her a stranger.

And you: at what hour does dread steal your sleep every night without an alarm, and behind which mashrabiya do you stand, waiting for something you cannot name?
