Nobody Asked You to Be the Sage of the City

Therapy is not life, and its vocabulary is not the language we have to live in. On the utopia some clinicians build on top of a real human moment, and the promise that looks merciful at first and then becomes a burden on the one who received it.

Therapy is not life, and its vocabulary is not the language we have to live in.

Some clinicians have turned their work into a utopia, and the person now pays the price of not knowing how to live in it. Instead of therapy helping him return to his life, his whole life is now required to look like therapy, and he is expected to review every word and every feeling as if he were sitting in the session all the time.

A cosmetic, imaginary world where everything has a name, an explanation and a right way. Relationships in it change through talking, people know their needs and say them at the right moment, the person across from them has the energy to listen, understand and help, and if he feels tired he takes time for himself, if he is harmed he leaves, if he feels anger he knows how to express it without wounding. The talk is so beautiful it can make you forget to ask: where does this world exist? And who said the person walking into your office can live in it?

And at first the talk really is dazzling. Someone tells you that you are not less, that you deserve love, that your fear makes sense, that the exhaustion in your body is real. After years of shame and helplessness, you find words that lift an accusation you had been living under, and you find a name for a pain you thought was a defect in you. That has value. What I object to is the one who takes this human moment, builds a utopia on top of it, and convinces you that this is the life you are supposed to find the moment you understand yourself.

And here the illusion begins, when help in understanding your life turns into a promise of another life. Suddenly you have a complete picture of what a healthy relationship looks like, the healthy reply, the legitimate need, the way you are supposed to be met by people, but you have no room for the shortfall that will meet you the moment you get home. The picture dazzles at first, but once you meet reality it can turn out crueler than the words it came to help you live without.

In this city boundaries are stated and people accept them, a request is answered the moment it is made, everyone knows how to give you validation before disagreeing with you, the one with burnout takes time for himself, the one living in harm can leave, and the one who needs support finds it. All of this is comforting talk, but where are these people? And where are the money, the time and the alternative that make the talk possible? The therapist has an answer about healthy behavior, but sometimes not a single question about its price in the life of the person sitting in front of him.

Boundaries, self-care, burnout and validation are tools and meanings with real value, but there is a clinician who treats them as entry requirements for life. If you cannot set boundaries you still do not value yourself; if you cannot take time for yourself you are choosing depletion; if you still need the person who hurt you then what you have done is still not enough. Every time you fail to do the beautiful thing it is charged to your account, and you leave his office carrying your old pain and a new shame: the shame of not knowing how to be the person the prescription promised you would be.

Tell someone to set boundaries at work without asking whether he can afford to lose that job, and you are testing his ability to withstand your words. Tell someone to leave the harmful relationship without understanding what he is attached to, what he is afraid of and how he will live, then count his inability to leave as resistance to treatment, and you are placing a new guilt on top of his pain. He does not need to prove to you that he understands. He may understand and be cornered, and the difference between the two is bigger than the words you are saying.

And here appears the foolishness that wears the robe of confidence and wisdom: talk detached from circumstances, and when reality turns hard the defect is in the person. Still cannot love yourself? Still letting them? Still need him? After everything you understood, it still hurts? As if you entered therapy to stop living with your weakness and your entirely legitimate, entirely human helplessness, to stop needing, to be able to do the right thing in any circumstance, and if you could not, then you are the one not working on yourself enough. The therapist is in one valley, and the person in front of him is trying to figure out how to finish his day in a completely different one.

Knowledge is not an authority you impose on a life whose circumstances you do not know. My objection is to the therapist, the psychologist or the psychiatrist when he does this. The term serves you in your work, but the person who comes to you is not required to speak like you. He has his own words, his own way, his upbringing and the things he learned to keep going with, and when he says he is suffocating he does not have to turn the suffocation into a report so that you can hear him. The words are supposed to bring you closer to him, but if your interpretation becomes more important than what he says, you are trying to make him a copy of your understanding instead of helping him learn to be himself. If every time he says it hurts you explain, every time he says I cannot you interpret, and every time he says there is no means you send him back to ask why he is stopping himself, then you are defending your beautiful world against the person who came to ask you for help.

And then we come to needs. I need attention, and that is my right. Fine, but I, the one in front of you, have limited energy, responsibilities, and a pain I may not know how to explain the way you do. My acknowledging your need is not a promise that I can meet it now, and the helplessness of the person who loves you is not necessarily abandonment. You may really need it, he may really be unable, and there may still be love between you, without the question becoming which of you is hurting the other. And so the great saying of the wise man: it is not that I do not want to give you, it is that I cannot.

You cannot tell me my need is my right and expect that sentence to have created in me a capacity that was not there. It is my right to be seen, loved and accepted, but the people in my life have limits too; I am not the only one with boundaries. There are needs that can stay unanswered for a while without us dying, and without their postponement being a breaking of the back, and there is a shortfall we can live with while we try to change it. Food, safety and necessary treatment are not what this is about. We are talking about turning every wish for attention and affirmation into something that must happen right now, with no room for waiting.

I see a discourse that tells people to accept their feelings and at the same time leaves no feeling without work. What are you feeling? Why? Where in your body? What will you do with it? Which skill do you need? These questions have their place and their use, but if they become the only way you know how to live, your eye will stay fixed on yourself even while you are trying to catch your breath. He came in so the load would lighten, and found himself needing to review every feeling before he could finish his day.

And I do not think every pain has to yield a lesson. Sometimes a person feels pain and his share of the day is that he managed to get through it, without wisdom, without a great discovery, without a story that explains how he got better. There is a cruelty in asking the wounded to also prove that his wound was useful. Is it not enough that it passed, or does pain need a graduation project before we are allowed to let it go?

And one of the rules of this city is that confrontation is always right and escape is something to be ashamed of. But a person sometimes needs to step away a little, choose laughter, sleep, say I cannot today, and come back when he can. There is avoidance that shuts his life down on him, and there is a temporary rest that helps him go on, and the difference between them requires understanding the person in front of you. And if the old way was harming him, we understand what it did for him and find something else to do with him, instead of taking it away, leaving him exposed, and calling the exposure progress.

I am afraid of a promise that looks merciful at first and then becomes a burden on the one who received it. A person who learned the names of his needs and no longer knows how to live when they are still there, unanswered. He can now explain frustration, and every new frustration feels like proof that his whole life is wrong. He asks those who love him for a complete response, and when they cannot, he becomes certain he is alone, then goes back to questioning whether he deserves love. Here the utopia begins to break him, because the world he heard about does not exist, and he now sees the defect in himself or in people because of its absence.

And sometimes the disappointment does not stop at him; it enters his relationships too. The one who loves him is now required to prove love in the way he memorized, his family is required to learn a new language, and his ordinary day is full of violations of the ideal picture. There is no longer a hurting person in front of him, there is a person who is not working on himself; there is no longer a hard moment to get through, there is new proof that the whole world is against him. Here the discourse that began by easing shame can end in a siege: he cannot accept his life, and the people around him do not know how to live inside the definition he brought them.

The problem is not that you told him his rights. The problem is that you let him think a right means everything is available, that awareness means contradiction ends, and that understanding pain means it will not hurt. You are not unjust when you help him see what is possible and what is not possible right now. You are unjust when you leave him to punish himself because he still needs, to hate those who love him because they are still human, and to reject his life because it does not look like the model he learned.

And the irony is that dialectical behavior therapy itself contains distress tolerance and acceptance of reality, not a promise that pain ends, and it contains skills that help you get through the crisis without greater harm. When we take from therapy the names of needs and leave behind the tolerance of frustration, or take the right to object and leave behind the acceptance that some things are not in our hands right now, we have dropped part of the work we need. We took the words people like to hear and left the work that makes them useful in life.

This does not mean that everyone who spoke about his pain has become weak, nor that people should go back to swallowing oppression and calling it contentment. There is a difference between helping a person see the harm and be able to say no, and making him stop at every discomfort and treat it as an assault. And there is a difference between enduring because he chose to and enduring because he is cornered. Both need us to understand them, not to give them the same advice, and whoever cannot see that difference should review himself before reviewing other people's lives.

I want a therapy that helps me return to my life, not one that takes my whole life. I take from it what helps me and leave it in its place, and I know how to love, work, disagree and joke without constantly reviewing myself as if I needed approval for every move. There are things we learn in order to know how to live, but if we stay standing at the learning we will never do anything with it. Because one of the biggest fears is this: I am afraid that when I heal I will stop being me, the me I have known and loved large parts of, my passion, my sensitivity, my recklessness, and sometimes my madness.

We need to live with our authenticity, our street-smarts and sometimes our silliness, with the word that comes out of us before we arrange it, with the laugh that unties the choking before we understand it, and with the time we let a situation pass because not everything deserves us opening our whole life to it. We learn to say what we need, but we keep knowing how to joke instead of explain, to go quiet when words become a burden, and to finish our day while we still have questions with no answers.

And these are not things that have to be taken from us so we can be healthier. I am not required to be a person who knows the right sentence for every moment, understands his motives before every act, comes out of every fight more mature and out of every pain wiser. If every mistake means I have not healed enough yet, then you have turned therapy into an exam that never ends, and made my ordinary existence need justification.

And the clinician who sells this cosmetic world must ask himself: has the person in front of me become more able to live, or more able to put every detail of his life on trial? Did his choices grow, or did the conditions he must meet before he allows himself to rest grow? I did not come to you to become a perfect copy of your idea of a human being. Help me know how to live, and leave me the right to be me.

Nobody asked you to be the sage of the city.
